There had been thousands before him, and there will be thousands more, he thought.An ever-looming undercurrent of wistfulness subsumed the monotony of his work. Swiveling in his chair and typing incessant commands into the neon terminal before him while mindlessly popping bubblegum, his brows began to furrow. It had been a few years now since his decision to live without a Regulator, despite his many colleagues’ light misgivings on the matter.But there was a firm resolution in his choice every time he had to enter that final command. Leaning back into his chair, caustic flashes of light cast harsh shadows upon his features. Watching the sophisticated machinery before him sever the profoundly intangible into its constituent 'parts' for redistribution, he sighed through his nose.
